New website in progress. Please excuse our mess while we make some changes
We began creating this piece with the idea that we would give voice to the Nisei’s story, something we felt to be missing knowledge for the younger generation of Japanese Canadians, ourselves included. Our idea was that the post-war generations (Sansei, Yonsei and Gosei) could find pride in their JC identity if they heard the stories of where we had come from. We also wanted to give back to our community and in particular, the Nisei, in a way that we as theatre artists knew how. We have received so much from them.
We have edited over 70 hours of interviews into a 90 minute theatre piece. It’s not easy to get 60 lifetimes into a one-act play. This play is the tip of the iceberg. The Tashme Project would not exist without the memories, thoughts and generosity of spirit of our Nisei, Sansei, Yonsei and Shin-Ijusha interviewees. We cannot thank them enough.
